I
think I have mentioned that Roger Jones was a real pilot until he was diagnosed
with diabetes. Below is an article by Roger and some photos.
Here's some pics of me flying G-BRXL at Compton
Abbas and Badminton taildragger fly-ins in 1990. She is in the colours she
wore when I first imported her from the States in 1989. In 1991 she was
re-painted in a researched scheme as an L3F with olive green uppers and light
grey below. She was called "Fat Bullet" and wore her number in
yellow on the upper wing and fin (I'm wracking my brain to remember it, it was
something like 788042) and the word ARMY in black under both wings. he had the
USAAC "meatball" star (Blue outer circle, white star and red inner
circle - the "meatball") on wings and fus and the red and white
horizontal striped rudder that went with those makings. The CAA allowed me to
fly without national registration because these colours were verified by the
Smithsonian as being correct for the type.
I wonder if anyone reading this might have some
pictures in this scheme as I've got a bit of an inkling to do a scale model of
the old bird. Incidentally, this colour scheme nearly got me political asylum
in Germany once, remind me to tell you the story!
If anyone finds a pic of her in USAAC colours, I
promise to write it up for the site.
Keep up the good work. Have you thought about
extending it more to other forms of flight? ful-size, gliding, kites, anything
that flies in fact. This site could become really big! Roger (I'll
keep it small for now thanks Roger. Rob)
