North London Flyers at Portugal Fly In

The “secundo encontro de aeromodelismo” (second meeting of aero modellers) took place in the town of Vendas Novas in southern Portugal on 28th September 2003. Twelve members of our club made the trip from North London to attend the one day event at the end of September and a great time was had by all. This event drew flyers from all over Portugal, some from Spain and some from England – including Dick (of Midland Helicopters fame) who travelled the furthest from Leicestershire. Remarkably, the event was managed by a club that is only two years old and has less than 20 members!

The club was formed with more than a little assistance from our own Tony Madrugo, Club Flying Instructor and native of the town. Tony left Portugal as a teenager but still has ties with the area and is a member of the club. The club flies at a disused airstrip on the town’s military base, housing an artillery school. The commandant is very obliging and provided other facilities on the day, including latrines and shelter from the sun.

It was very hot in the middle of the day, even in late September and early October - so much so, that the canopy on my P51 Reno Racer buckled in the heat. Temperatures during the day climbed as high as 37C and this year there was no rain. Everyone enjoyed flying in such excellent conditions, and for a few days before the event we had the flying site to ourselves.

Our contribution to the event was the provision of a banner inaugurating the meeting.

Here is a movie clip showing the banner being towed as you can see by a Ready IIs. The other banner also towed by a Ready II is our club banner.

There were over 80 pilots on the day sporting a variety of models, including a half scale Edge powered by a 200cc petrol engine as well as the Westland Scout scale helicopter flown beautifully by Dick from Midland helicopters. Our own gear was transported overland via the northern Spanish port of Santander. Tony managed to pack over thirty models into his van and a small convey (including my caravan) took a little over 11 hours to make the journey.

Vendas Novas lies inland from Lisbon about 45 minutes drive away. Those who did not want to brave the sea journey flew down and hired a car, travelling to the restaurant of Tony's cousin Philip called "A Familia".

We would like to thank Philip, his wife Matilda and their son Stuart for all their many kindnesses and for looking after us while we were there.

We would also like to thank the members and committee of the Clube de Aeromodelismo de Vendas Novas for inviting us and showing us a great time.

Roll on September 2004. Viva Vendas Novas!
